Work done
How it is said to have ended
- says it was fixed2
- says it held for a while2
- says it came back2
- says it did not fix it2
- result not stated45
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesUnwanted ABS activation at low speed (front wheel speed sensor mounting corrosion)4
Recall2000–2002 GMC YUKON XL ・ —
ABS activation recall in pickup trucks and SUVs
1Fault
- Corrosion may occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor; if the brakes are applied at a speed greater than 6 km/h (3.7 mph) but less than 16 km/h (10 mph), the corrosion may cause an unwanted ABS activation.
- If this occurred where stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
- The condition does not set any ABS codes and does not illuminate the ABS warning lamp.
2Finding the cause
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- Check the mounting surface on the sensor head for flatness against a metal machinist's scale or other straight edge, in multiple positions/directions (minimum 3).
- With the bearing rotated at about one revolution per second, the reading should be at least 350 ACmV; if it is less than 350 ACmV the wheel speed sensor must be replaced.
3Correction
Repair
- If the mounting surface on the sensor is warped or bent, the sensor must be replaced.
- Thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub with a wire brush, sandpaper, emery cloth, scotch brite or equivalent to remove any rust or corrosion.
- Spray two thin coats of the specified rust penetrating lubricant (corrosion inhibitor) on the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub, letting it dry between coats.
- When the corrosion inhibitor is dry to the touch (about 10 minutes), apply a light coating of the specified grease to the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub and to the sensor and O-ring.
- Tighten the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

Caution
- Remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore; do not pry it with a screwdriver or other device, because prying will break the sensor body off in the bore.
- This revision changes some breakpoints and adds vehicles that have moved into the severe corrosion areas; copies of bulletin 05068B, issued April 2006, are to be discarded.

HVAC Blower Motor Resistor Module Overheating
1Fault
2Finding the cause
3Correction
Not stated
What the documents say to do
HVAC blower motor resistor module / connector overheatingRepair
- Dealers install a new blower motor resistor and resistor module connector.
- Cut the wires back far enough to remove any melted insulation.
Caution
- The connector must be replaced even if it was replaced in an earlier repair.
Read the sentences of the record
- Cause
- On certain vehicles, the interface between the electrical terminals of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) blower relay resistor module and the wiring connector (which powers the module) may be incapable of conducting higher current levels for sustained periods of operation. In addition, moisture and other contaminants (such as road de-icing materials) may enter the fresh air intake plenum and contact the internal circuit of the module or corrode the terminals. These conditions may cause the relay resistor module or wiring connector to overheat, causing various symptoms such as: the HVAC blower may not function on certain or all blower speed settings; a burning-plastic smell or smoke may be present in the vehicle, or; the HVAC blower may run continually with the ignition in the OFF position. These warning signs could, in certain instances, be leading indicators of an impending vehicle fire, which could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Owners will be provided with additional warranty coverage for the blower motor resistor module/wiring connector overheating condition. Under this "special warranty coverage", should this condition occur within 10 years or 240,000 km from first vehicle registration, dealers will install a replacement blower motor resistor and resistor module connector.

Aluminum wheel bead seat cleaning and resurfacing procedure
1Fault
- A tire slowly loses air pressure over a period of days or weeks.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- Abrasive elements may intrude between the tire and wheel at the bead seat, and the relative motion between tire and wheel lets the particles wear the wheel and tire materials.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- The corrosion may be on the inboard or outboard bead seating surface and is not visible until the tire is dismounted from the wheel.
- After a water dunk tank leak test, if the source of the leak is around the bead seat of the wheel, dismount the tire to examine the bead seat.
- Bead seat corrosion looks like blistering of the wheel finish, giving a rough or uneven surface on which the tire has difficulty keeping a proper seal.
- For vehicles with 32,186 km (20,000 mi) or less, the total combined linear area of repairable corrosion is 100 mm (4 in) or less; beyond that the wheel should be replaced.
- For vehicles that have exceeded 32,186 km (20,000 mi), the total combined linear area of repairable corrosion is 200 mm (8 in) or less.
3Correction
Repair
- Use a clean-up (fine cut) sanding disc or biscuit to remove the corrosion and any flaking paint, back to material that is stable and firmly bonded to the wheel.
- Once the corrosion is eliminated, coat the repaired area with a commercially available tire sealant such as Patch Brand Bead Sealant or equivalent.
Parts
- Part number 16118, Patch Bead Sealer (1 Quart (= 0.946 L)).
Caution
- Do not replace a wheel for slow air loss unless the wheel has been evaluated and/or repair has been tried with this procedure.

Chromed Aluminum Wheels—Chemical Staining and Corrosion
1Fault
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- Chemical staining mostly results from acid based cleaners; the stains are frequently milky, black or greenish.
- A second type of staining comes from road chemicals such as calcium chloride used for dust control on unpaved roads; it looks like small pitting.
- A third type comes from prolonged exposure to brake dust, which penetrates the chrome.
3Correction
Repair
- After cleaning, wax the wheel with ACDelco Cleaner Wax, P/N 88865218 (in Canada, 2675208), to protect it from brake dust.
- For milky stains from acidic cleaners, apply 3M Chrome and Metal Polish #39527 with a clean terry cloth towel; the staining diminishes as it is applied.

Caution
- Do not use cleaning solutions containing hydrofluoric, oxalic and most other acids on chrome wheels (or any wheels).
- Any wheel cleaner must be thoroughly rinsed off the wheel with clean, clear water.
- The wheels must be cleaned before the polish is applied, to avoid scratching the wheel surface.
- The polish reduces the thickness of the chrome plating and, used incorrectly or excessively, may remove it altogether.
- On wheels spotted by road chemicals the procedure may improve the condition marginally but will not restore the finish or remove the pitting.
