This is an open preview: every record can be read without an account. The details of the plans are in preparation.

Real records, with their sources.

The same symptom has happened somewhere.

Find cases of the same symptom, and what was done about it, in defect and repair records on American vehicles. Each can be checked against the original text and its source.

Choose from the list with pictures

Enter a symptom and its possible causes are drawn

Press a cause for what the technical documents say to check and repair, and how the same work ended in the records, in one answer. The passages behind it open when wanted.

Everything written here stands on a source.

FaultCrate does not fill gaps with guesses. It shows only what the records and documents of public agencies and the manufacturer say, with the original text and its source.

  • A quotation for every statement

Each statement of a known issue, and each point taken from a manufacturer's document, carries a quotation from the text it comes from. A statement whose quotation is not found in that text is not published.

  • Open the original

Every record can be opened down to its original text and its source.

  • Nothing added

No cause, work or figure is supplied that the original does not state. What is not known stays “not stated”.

  • A complaint stays a complaint

An owner's complaint is an unverified report, not a confirmed failure. It is shown apart from recalls and the manufacturer's documents, by kind.

What you can do

FaultCrate is a search service of defect and repair records for shops that work on American vehicles. It follows records published by public agencies in the United States and Canada, and GM's technical documents, from a symptom to its possible causes and what to do, with the original text and its source. Judging the cause and deciding the repair remain the shop's.

  • From a symptom to its possible causes, drawn

Enter a symptom, a warning display or a trouble code, and the possible causes are drawn by vehicle system.

  • Down to the check and the repair

Pick a cause for what the technical documents say to check and repair, the part numbers, and how the same work ended in the records.

  • What each model year reports

Counts of records by symptom and by system, model year by model year. A count is a number of records, not a failure rate.

  • Recent movement, and related vehicles

Topics that have grown lately, and the same search on vehicles of the same platform.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose a vehicle

Search by part of a name, by brand or by model year.

  2. 2

    Enter the symptom

Type a symptom, a warning display or a trouble code, or pick one of the common symptoms. Narrow by model year and the like if you wish.

  3. 3

Pick a cause, read what to do, check the original

Read the check and the repair, and open the quoted passages or the records behind them when you want to.
