Record by record
35 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.
Component named as the cause
Work done
How it is said to have ended
- says it did not fix it6
- result not stated10
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Manufacturer communication2001–2006 GMC YUKON XL ・ 2017-08-15(1 earlier editions of this document folded here)
Service Suspension System message and rear suspension ride height issues
1Fault
- On 2009 or prior vehicles, a Service Suspension System message appears on the DIC with incorrect rear ride height, and the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) module has DTC C0696 or C0711 set.
- A Service Suspension System message with rear ride height that may be low under a heavy payload and DTC C0711 set may be caused by an internal fault in the ALC pressure sensor, which may occur due to moisture getting into the sensor.
- A hose may hang loose at the left rear of the vehicle; it may be damaged or disconnected from the air inlet filter of the auto leveling suspension air compressor.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- This can be caused by the wiring to the automatic level control (ALC) pressure sensor being shorted to ground.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- The air compressor assembly may need to be removed from the vehicle to see whether the wiring is pinched between the compressor assembly and the frame.
3Correction
Repair
- Repair any damaged or shorted circuits, then reposition the wiring so it is not damaged again when the compressor assembly is installed.
- The sensor is no longer serviced separately; for sensor replacement install a complete air filter, dryer and sensor assembly.
- For the loose hose, replace the auto leveling compressor air inlet filter and hose assembly (PN 22197160).
Part numbers printed in the document
The numbers are as the document prints them. The name and the replacing number are what the pages of GMPartsGiant, a reseller of genuine parts and not GM, state. Aftermarket equivalents are not checked here (the links only search by number). Confirm the fit for the vehicle (VIN) before ordering.
Parts
- Vehicles built before May, 2012 need a jumper harness for the updated sensor design, which is included with the complete air filter, dryer and sensor assembly PN 22964558; vehicles built in May, 2012 and later use PN 22941807.

Caution
- Do not replace the complete air compressor assembly for this wiring concern.
- The automatic level system normally does not, or only very infrequently, cycle the compressor at key up. The Electronic Suspension Control module checks the system pressure at start up; if it is below 10 psi (69 kpa), the system operates the compressor to add air to the shocks as a replenishment cycle.

What the documents say to do
Parking brake linings worn out prematurely, parking brake does not hold (PBR single-shoe drum-in-hat)Confirm
- On complaint vehicles examined in the field, wear occurred earlier and to a greater extent on the driver's side parking brake unit and was largely localized at the tip of one of the linings.
Repair
- A revised clip designed to exert less force on the shoe went into MY 2003 production and into the service part stream. Installing the newer clip and replacing worn linings has been shown to remedy the defect.
- The closing report lists a bulletin of Aug 2004 as 02-05-26-001B "Brakes - Parking Brake Shoe Retainer Clip Availability", announcing a new retainer clip service kit for DIH-equipped vehicles.
Caution
- The vehicles warn the operator with a chime if driven over 3 mph (= 4.83 km/h) with the parking brake engaged.

Service Engine Soon Lamp and P0442 Diagnostic Information
1Fault
- The service engine soon lamp (MIL) is on with DTC P0442, but no leak can be verified with the system test in the service information.
2Finding the cause
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- Connect the scan tool and command the EVAP system closed.
- Start the engine and watch the fuel tank pressure sensor value for about two minutes.
- If the tank pressure sensor value changes (shows vacuum), remove the purge solenoid and pressurize its fuel tank side with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A tester.
- If the sensor value does not change, install the CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid; use no other adaptor or pressurization method.
- With the EVAP system closed, pressurize through the CH 48096 adaptor and watch the pressure/vacuum gauge for at least 5 minutes until the system is fully stable, then add smoke.
3Correction
Repair
- Add smoke and let the pressure stabilize; if smoke passes through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid.
Caution
- After verifying P0442, do not disturb any fuel system component before testing.
- EVAP test pressure must not exceed 13 in H2O (0.5 PSI (= 3.45 kPa)); more can make components perform inaccurately and lead to misdiagnosis.

- Confirm:If the sensor value does not change, install the CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid; use no other adaptor or pressurization method.
- Confirm:With the EVAP system closed, pressurize through the CH 48096 adaptor and watch the pressure/vacuum gauge for at least 5 minutes until the system is fully stable, then add smoke.
- Confirm:Check the canister vent solenoid filter or fresh-air line for smoke; an intermittent vent solenoid fault may show up when the vent solenoid is cycled and the test repeated.
- Confirm:If smoke finds nothing, the leak may exist only under vacuum: use the scan tool Purge/Seal function to pull a vacuum on the EVAP system and watch the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.
- Caution:EVAP test pressure must not exceed 13 in H2O (0.5 PSI (= 3.45 kPa)); more can make components perform inaccurately and lead to misdiagnosis.

- This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.
