The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Common on this vehicle:NoiseWarning lightLoss of engine power, no accelerationVibration or shudderLeakShifting faultGauge or instrument faultParking brake

Record by record

15 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesP0420 / P0430 on a new or just-replaced catalytic converter (break-in not completed)1

  1. Manufacturer communication2004–2006 GMC YUKON XL ・ 2017-08-15

Service Engine Soon Light at Low Mileage Diagnostic Information

    1. 1Fault

      • An SES light may appear on low mileage vehicles or after a recent catalytic converter replacement.
      • DTCs P0420 and/or P0430 may be stored.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • After a converter replacement the engine run time restrictions are no longer in place because the vehicle is no longer new, so the converter may not complete a thorough break-in cycle, possibly resulting in a false DTC P0420 and/or P0430.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • On a new or low mileage vehicle, use the Tech 2 to verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the IPC data display.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Clear the DTCs and perform the drive cycle described in the document.
      2. Drive cycle step: drive at sustained highway speed for 25 to 30 minutes, then stop.
      3. Drive cycle step: after the engine has been off for 1 minute, restart and resume highway speed for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
      4. If the diagnostics do not pass after the drive cycle, perform SI diagnostics and repair as necessary.

    Remedy
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on at low mileage. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and or P0430 stored. Technician should be advised that the catalytic converter efficiency Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time to allow break-in of the catalytic converter. Technician will need to use a Tech2 to check the verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the Instrument Panel Cluster  Data Display/Data 1 List in the scan tool match. If the engine run time is less than one hour, the battery may have been disconnected, or another vehicle power loss event may have occurred, during vehicle manufacturing. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle. If the catalytic converter was replaced and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes set it may be a result of the engine run time restrictions no longer being in place since the vehicle is no longer new. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle.

Known issuesSingle-cylinder misfire (P0300-P0308) and/or chirp, squeak or tick at camshaft speed: worn cam lobe / lifter, valve or valve spring1

  1. Manufacturer communication2000–2006 GMC YUKON XL ・ 2017-08-15

Service Engine Soon Lamp, Misfire, and Engine Noise Information

    1. 1Fault

      • With the SES light on, a P0300-P0308 DTC is found with misfires counting on a single cylinder that may or may not be felt.
      • A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed); it may be a chirp, squeak, squeal or tick and may increase off idle.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • When SI diagnosis does not isolate the cause, it may be a worn camshaft lobe and/or lifter roller, a sticking valve, valve leakage, a broken valve spring, or a collapsed AFM (Active Fuel Management) lifter.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. During the noise, press with a wooden hammer handle on the valve side, push rod side and side of each rocker arm; if pressure on the valve side changes the noise, it is most likely a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder.
      2. Measure cam lobe lift at the push rod side of the rocker arm and compare with other rockers on the same bank; the misfiring or ticking cylinder should have clearly less lift if a lifter roller and/or cam lobe is worn.
      3. A good indicator of a sticking valve is misfires that continue to count on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
      4. For a suspected sticking valve, snap the valve onto its seat and confirm it comes off easily; if force is needed to tap it off the seat, excessive carbon build up exists, which may be repaired by decarboning the engine.
      5. The Cylinder Leakage Test outlined in SI should isolate valve leakage by finding excessive leakage past an intake or exhaust valve compared with the others.
      1 more points
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • If a worn camshaft lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters per SI, and also replace the plastic lifter guide for the lifter that had the damage.

      Caution

      • A worn cam lobe is easy to overlook through the lifter bores, and unworn lifter rollers do not mean the related cam lobes are okay; both must be carefully inspected.

    • Confirm:A broken valve spring may stay stacked together and be hard to see, so lightly push on different places on the springs with a small hammer handle.
    • Repair:If a worn camshaft lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters per SI, and also replace the plastic lifter guide for the lifter that had the damage.
    • Caution:A worn cam lobe is easy to overlook through the lifter bores, and unworn lifter rollers do not mean the related cam lobes are okay; both must be carefully inspected.

Aftermarket ALDL/DLC Interface Devices - Diagnostic Concerns

    1. 1Fault

      • The radio may not shut off after the vehicle is shut down, and bus or LAN traffic may stay active, leading to a discharged battery.
      • C0561 may be stored in the EBCM, leading to a traction control issue, and there may be no high speed LAN communication with various communication U-codes.
      • The SES, MIL or CEL light may be set with numerous communication DTCs such as U0100, U0101, U186B and U1862.
      • The transmission may not shift for one key cycle (TCM in default mode), and gauge readings may be erratic or displays may flicker.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Monitoring devices and other electronic accessories such as aftermarket cruise control or police speed checking devices (RADAR or LIDAR) may cause one or more of the listed concerns.
      • Many of the problems could be caused by an open connection on the HSCAN bus: a device that connects to only one CAN + causes bus errors and erratic ECU behavior.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • If normal diagnostics find no root cause, check for a device plugged into the ALDL or Data Link Connector (DLC) for tracking and/or maintenance interval scheduling.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If SI diagnostics do not identify the source and the device is available, try to duplicate the condition, then remove the device to see whether the condition is eliminated.
      2. If removing the DLC interface device resolves the concern, tell the customer the result and that they should work with the device's supplier for further resolution.

      Caution

      • The customer may remove the device for use in another vehicle while theirs is in for service.
      • Some devices carry a second DLC connector, with the device and the rest of the harness hidden out of sight, so the technician may not notice that the diagnostic connector is not in the factory location.
