The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Common on this vehicle:Corrosion or rustReduced brakingLeakWarning lightLoss of engine power, no accelerationParking brakeNoiseGauge or instrument fault

Record by record

78 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesAutoride (Z55) Service Ride Control / Service Suspension System message1

  1. Manufacturer communication2001–2006 GMC YUKON XL ・ 2017-08-15(1 earlier editions of this document folded here)

Service Suspension System message and rear suspension ride height issues

    1. 1Fault

      • On 2009 or prior vehicles, a Service Suspension System message appears on the DIC with incorrect rear ride height, and the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) module has DTC C0696 or C0711 set.
      • A Service Suspension System message with rear ride height that may be low under a heavy payload and DTC C0711 set may be caused by an internal fault in the ALC pressure sensor, which may occur due to moisture getting into the sensor.
      • A hose may hang loose at the left rear of the vehicle; it may be damaged or disconnected from the air inlet filter of the auto leveling suspension air compressor.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • This can be caused by the wiring to the automatic level control (ALC) pressure sensor being shorted to ground.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • The air compressor assembly may need to be removed from the vehicle to see whether the wiring is pinched between the compressor assembly and the frame.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Repair any damaged or shorted circuits, then reposition the wiring so it is not damaged again when the compressor assembly is installed.
      2. The sensor is no longer serviced separately; for sensor replacement install a complete air filter, dryer and sensor assembly.
      3. For the loose hose, replace the auto leveling compressor air inlet filter and hose assembly (PN 22197160).

Part numbers printed in the document

The numbers are as the document prints them. The name and the replacing number are what the pages of GMPartsGiant, a reseller of genuine parts and not GM, state. Aftermarket equivalents are not checked here (the links only search by number). Confirm the fit for the vehicle (VIN) before ordering.

      Parts

      • Vehicles built before May, 2012 need a jumper harness for the updated sensor design, which is included with the complete air filter, dryer and sensor assembly PN 22964558; vehicles built in May, 2012 and later use PN 22941807.

      Caution

      • Do not replace the complete air compressor assembly for this wiring concern.
      • The automatic level system normally does not, or only very infrequently, cycle the compressor at key up. The Electronic Suspension Control module checks the system pressure at start up; if it is below 10 psi (69 kpa), the system operates the compressor to add air to the shocks as a replenishment cycle.

Brake Hydro-Boost Housing Relief Valve Bore Recall

    1. 1Fault

      • The relief valve bore in the brake hydro-boost module may be out of specification, which could fracture the relief valve o-ring seal inside the module.
      • If the seal fractures, the driver may hear during braking an engine compartment noise like the one made when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop, and may feel slightly higher steering effort while braking and parking.
      • Under certain driving conditions a fractured seal may require slightly more brake pedal effort for the same deceleration, which could result in a crash without prior warning.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Inspection found a machining error in the relief bore cavity of modules produced on one of the automated boring machines used for the base housing.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Look at the color of the relief valve: if it is metallic yellow or looks like brass, no further action is required.
      2. If a yellow, pink or white paint mark is visible, no further inspection or repair is required, and any stamped number is to be disregarded.
      3. With no paint marks and a stamped number 2, 3 or 4 visible, no further inspection or repair is required.
      4. If a stamped number 1 is visible on the machined surface, the relief valve must be replaced.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. With the ignition OFF, pump the brake pedal at least ten times.
      2. Unscrew the original relief valve from the hydraulic brake booster with the tool supplied with the new relief valve.
      3. Insert the new relief valve into the bore and tighten it to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
      4. With the master cylinder mounted flush to the booster, install the nuts and tighten them to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

      Parts

      • Part number 10398682, VALVE KIT, P/B BOOS CONT, quantity 1 per vehicle if required.

      Caution

      • Take care when working around the accumulator, which contains high-pressure compressed gas and hydraulic fluid.
      • Do not blow compressed air into the bore or flush the valve bore with commercially available cleaners; this could damage the booster or master cylinder.

Hydraulic Brake Pipe Replacement Service Strategy

    1. 1Fault

      • Customer Care and Aftersales (CCA) has released pre-formed and pre-flared hydraulic brake pipe kits as an improved service strategy for replacing hydraulic brake pipes.

      Repair

      1. The kits can be used whenever the entire brake pipe assemblies must be replaced, and include all the pipes needed except the rear axle crossover pipe.
      2. On utilities, remove the 6 left side body mount bolts and the core support mount bolt.
      3. Carefully raise the left side of the body from inboard of the frame rails approximately 51 mm (2 in).
      4. Tighten the brake pipe fittings to 18 lb ft (= 24.4 N·m) (the text prints the metric value as "25 Y").
      5. Bleed the hydraulic brake system after installation, per Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in SI.

      Parts

      • If the rear axle crossover pipe needs replacement, order it from the appropriate parts catalog and install it with the Brake Pipe Replacement procedure in SI.
      • The parts table selects the kit by model years, C/K, model, option usage and front suspension.

      Caution

      • The procedure is not for repairing or replacing a single damaged brake pipe; it is for replacing the entire brake pipe assemblies.
      • If the pipes are not installed in the correct port locations on all hydraulic components, the brake system, including ABS and/or TCS/VSES Stabilitrak where equipped, will not operate correctly and the hydraulic brake components may be damaged.
      • Remove the brake pipes from the existing routing clips carefully, because all the clips are re-used.
      • The kit pipes are not an exact duplicate of the installed pipes: they have a nylon coating for better corrosion protection and may have slightly different shapes and bends.

Service Engine Soon Lamp and P0442 Diagnostic Information

    1. 1Fault

      • The service engine soon lamp (MIL) is on with DTC P0442, but no leak can be verified with the system test in the service information.
    2. 2Finding the cause

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Connect the scan tool and command the EVAP system closed.
      2. Start the engine and watch the fuel tank pressure sensor value for about two minutes.
      3. If the tank pressure sensor value changes (shows vacuum), remove the purge solenoid and pressurize its fuel tank side with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A tester.
      4. If the sensor value does not change, install the CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid; use no other adaptor or pressurization method.
      5. With the EVAP system closed, pressurize through the CH 48096 adaptor and watch the pressure/vacuum gauge for at least 5 minutes until the system is fully stable, then add smoke.

      Repair

      • Add smoke and let the pressure stabilize; if smoke passes through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid.

      Caution

      • After verifying P0442, do not disturb any fuel system component before testing.
      • EVAP test pressure must not exceed 13 in H2O (0.5 PSI (= 3.45 kPa)); more can make components perform inaccurately and lead to misdiagnosis.

    Remedy
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay.

Brake hydro-boost module relief valve o-ring seal failure

    1. 1Fault

    3. 3Correction

      Not stated

Read the sentences of the record
    Cause
On certain vehicles, the relief valve o-ring seal within the brake hydro-boost module could fail. If this happens during braking applications, the driver may be able to hear an engine compartment noise similar to the sound that occurs when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop position. The driver could also experience a slight increase in steering efforts while braking and parking. Under certain driving conditions, a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort may be required to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seal failure. Correction: Dealers will inspect the hydro-boost module, and replace it, if necessary.
