The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Record by record

73 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesCastech cylinder head porosity crack (gradual coolant loss)1

  1. Manufacturer communication2001–2006 GMC YUKON DENALI ・ 2024-03-19

Internal Coolant Leak from Cylinder Head Location

    1. 1Fault

      • Some vehicles may experience a gradual coolant loss over time.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • A very low percentage of cylinder heads manufactured with an embossed Castech logo may develop a porosity crack in a very specific area.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Check whether the head is a Castech casting by looking for the casting logo on top of the intake port, under the rocker arm support rail and in the spring deck cavity portion of the cylinder head.
      2. If the head is a Castech casting, inspect the area around the five oil drain holes for witness marks indicating coolant seepage over time.
      3. The crack can be in any of the five cylinder head oil drains and shows as a clean or shiny area on an otherwise stained surface.
      4. Pressurizing the cooling system at this time may reveal coolant, air, or a combination weeping in the described area.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • If inspection reveals evidence of coolant witness marks, replace the entire cylinder head assembly.

      Caution

      • If the cylinder heads are not a Castech casting, follow normal diagnostic procedures in SI to determine the cause of the coolant loss.
      • If no evidence of coolant loss is found on inspection of Castech casting cylinder heads, follow normal diagnostic procedures in SI to determine the cause of the coolant loss.

    Aftermarket ALDL/DLC Interface Device Concerns

    1. 1Fault

      • Customers report various issues related to high or low speed data bus traffic.
      • Bus or LAN traffic may stay active, leading to a discharged vehicle battery.
      • C0561 stored in the EBCM, leading to a traction control issue.
      • SES, MIL or CEL light on with numerous communication DTCs such as U0100, U0101, U186B and U1862.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Monitoring devices and other electronic accessories such as aftermarket cruise control or police speed checking devices (RADAR or LIDAR) may cause one or more of the listed concerns.
      • Many of the problems could come from an open connection on the HSCAN bus; a device that connects to only one CAN + causes bus errors and erratic ECU behavior.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      • If normal SI diagnostics find no other root cause, check for a device plugged into the ALDL or Data Link Connector (DLC) for tracking and/or maintenance interval scheduling.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If SI diagnostics do not find the source and the device is available, try to duplicate the condition, then remove the device to see whether the condition is eliminated.
      2. If removing the DLC interface device resolves the concern, tell the customer the result and that they should work with the device's supplier for further resolution.

    Engine Oil Consumption Service Information

    1. 1Fault

      Not stated

    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Towing a trailer increases oil consumption and may put it outside the normal accepted rate given for an unloaded vehicle in personal use.
      • On vehicles usually driven short distances, less than 8 km (5 mi), especially in colder weather, unburned fuel and condensation may not evaporate out of the oil, and the dipstick may show the level as over-full.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Inspect the oil pan and engine covers for leakage due to over-tightened, damaged or out of place gaskets.
      2. Verify that the dipstick tube is fully seated in the block.
      3. Let the vehicle sit for at least 15 minutes after the engine has been shut off before reading the oil level.
      4. Verify that the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is operating properly; blockages, restrictions or damage to it can increase oil use.
      5. Do not test oil economy until the vehicle has accumulated at least 6400 km (4000 mi).

      Repair

      Caution

      • The accepted rate of oil consumption for these engines is 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi).

    • Applies to:Applies to 2025 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks equipped with an automatic transmission.
    • Condition:Water or ethylene glycol in ATF changes the friction of the clutches, frequently causing shudder during engagement or gear changes, especially during torque converter clutch engagement.
    • Confirm:An indication of water in the ATF: ATF blowing out of the transmission vent tube.
    • Confirm:The ATF may appear cloudy or, with extreme contamination, look like a strawberry milkshake.
    • Confirm:There may be visible water in the oil pan or a milky white substance inside the pan area.
    • Confirm:Spacer plate gaskets appear swollen or wrinkled in areas where they are not compressed.
    • Confirm:If water is found in the ATF and its source is not identified, or a leaking in-radiator transmission oil cooler is suspected, a simple and quick test kit that detects ethylene glycol in ATF is available.
    • Confirm:Obtain the Gly-Tek test kit from the Nelco Company and test the ATF to decide accurately whether the radiator needs to be replaced.
    • Repair:If water or coolant is found in the transmission, all rubber-type seals, all composition-faced clutch plates and/or bands, all nylon parts and the torque converter must be replaced.
    • Repair:Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter.
    • Repair:Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J-45096.
    • Repair:Thoroughly inspect the engine cooling system and hoses and clean/repair as necessary.

Tire Radial Force Variation (RFV) Service Bulletin

    1. 1Fault

      • The most common ride concern involving tire radial force variation is shake on smooth roads at highway speed, 105-115 km/h (65-70 mph).
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Tire related smooth road highway speed shake can be caused by three conditions: imbalance, out of round and tire force variation.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. With the vehicle raised, center the wheels on the hub by loosening all wheel nuts and hand-tightening them while shaking the wheel, then torque to specification with a torque wrench, not a torque stick.
      2. If light brake application increases the pulsation felt in the steering wheel, go to the brake-induced pulsation diagnosis in the Brakes section of the service manual.
      3. A reading of 35 to 50 Hz typically indicates a first order propshaft vibration.
      4. Generally a reading between 10 and 20 Hz indicates a tire/wheel vibration.
      5. If vibration continues after 10 minutes of driving above 72 km/h (45 mph), temporary tire flat-spotting can be ruled out.

    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • If the radial runout of a tire/wheel assembly is more than 0.040 in (1.02 mm), match mount the tire to the wheel to get below 0.040 in (1.02 mm).

      Caution

      • On the balancer always center the wheel by the pilot bore; never use the hub-cap bore, since it is not a precision machined surface.
