The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Common on this vehicle:LeakNoiseMisfire or rough idleVibration or shudder

Record by record

14 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Power steering pump and line replacement procedure

    1. 1Fault

      • In rare cases there is a lack of steering assist when stopped or during parking lot type maneuvers.
      • The condition goes away or greatly improves once the vehicle begins to move or is above parking lot speeds.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • The concern can be aggravated by worn tires, low tire air pressure, low power steering pump pressures, and tires larger than stock size.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Perform the "Power Steering System Test" found in SI and make any necessary repairs based on system diagnosis.
      2. To tell whether a 670 gear box is fitted, inspect the mounting bolts that attach the stub shaft housing; a 670 gear box has only 3 mounting bolts.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. If a C/K 1500 Series vehicle is equipped with a 670 gear box, replacing it with a 680 gear box may increase the customer satisfaction.
      2. When replacing a 670 gear box with a 680 gear box, replace the power steering gear, union fitting and both inlet O-ring seals.

      Parts

      • Parts (C/K 1500 series only): 88965542 Power Steering Gear, 26025709 Union Fitting, 26001594 Inlet O-ring Seal.

Part numbers printed in the document

The numbers are as the document prints them. The name and the replacing number are what the pages of GMPartsGiant, a reseller of genuine parts and not GM, state. Aftermarket equivalents are not checked here (the links only search by number). Confirm the fit for the vehicle (VIN) before ordering.

      Caution

      • For C/K 1500 series vehicles, if diagnostics did not lead to any repair, the concern is a normal operating characteristic.
      • If the stub shaft housing has no mounting bolts or has 4 bolts, do not proceed with this bulletin; the vehicle does not have a 670 gear box.
      • It is recommended in all cases that the proper tire size and the maximum tire pressure are set to the manufacturer's specification on the door placard, especially for the front tires.

    Power Steering Pump Whine Noise

    1. 1Fault

      • Owners may report a whine noise that normal diagnostics trace to the power steering pump, most commonly heard between idle and 2000 rpm.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • A new design power steering pump that helps improve or eliminate this noise was introduced with the new body style pickups and utilities from model year 2007 and the 2008 H2.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. GM dealers report that flushing and refilling the power steering system with Lucas Power Steering Fluid with Conditioners has reduced or eliminated the noise; GM Engineering has not evaluated this product.
      2. For vehicles built before that change, or if the Lucas fluid is not readily available, install the latest design GM power steering pump, looking up the part number in the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC).
      3. The warranty labor operation is E9523, Flush and Bleed Power Steering System, 0.9 hour.

      Parts

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician the steps needed to diagnose and repair the vehicles that may have unwanted or phantom phone calls. Technician will need to determine what type of call the customer is having that is unwanted. The vehicle may receive an incoming call just like any other phone. Typically the customer will hear the phone ringing in the vehicle. This scenario also includes incoming Bluetooth calls. One type of unwanted call can be made if the key pad is faulty the OnStar system will try to make a blue button call for shorted voltage in the circuits. The OnStar module could have an internal fault and produce a ″Phone Unavailable″ audio message also it may have a Diagnostic Trouble Code U1500 or B1000. Refer to diagnostics for the Diagnostic Trouble Code making sure to follow any applicable Bulletins or Preliminary Information sheets. A “Ready” or “OnStar ready” audio message heard while driving. In some cases it has been found that the customer is inadvertently pressing the ″push to talk″ button on the steering wheel controls. On rare occasions, other issues in the steering column or Steering Wheel Control system may induce this concern.
