Record by record

82 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesSingle-cylinder misfire (P0300-P0308) and/or chirp, squeak or tick at camshaft speed: worn cam lobe / lifter, valve or valve spring1

  1. Manufacturer communication2002–2006 GMC YUKON XL DENALI ・ 2023-05-06(3 earlier editions of this document folded here)

Diagnostic tip: valve, lifter or camshaft issue

    1. 1Fault

      • Misfire, chirp, squeak, squeal or tick noise, or MIL illuminated.
      • DTCs P0300 (engine misfire detected) and P0301 through P0308 (misfire detected on cylinders 1 through 8) are listed.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Possible causes: worn camshaft lobe and/or lifter roller, a sticking valve, valve leakage, a broken valve spring, or a collapsed AFM lifter.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed).
      2. If applying pressure to the valve side of the rocker changes the noise, a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder is most likely.
      3. Disconnect the coils and injectors on one bank, run the engine with that valve cover removed, back off the rocker arm a couple of turns and listen for a change in the noise.
      4. Measure cam lobe lift at the pushrod side of the rocker arm and compare with other rockers on the same bank; the misfiring or ticking cylinder should have clearly less lift.
      5. A good indicator of a sticking valve is misfires that keep counting on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
      1 more points
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • If a worn camshaft lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters, and the plastic lifter guide for the affected lifter.

      Caution

      • A damaged cam lobe is easy to overlook through the lifter bores, and unworn lifter rollers do not mean the cam lobes are okay; inspect both carefully.

EVAP Leak Diagnostic Service Bulletin (DTCs P0442/P0455)

    1. 1Fault

      • The MIL is illuminated, and DTC P0442 (EVAP small leak detected) and/or P0455 (EVAP large leak detected) may be set in the ECM.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • P0455 sets because of a large leak or a purge blockage: an unseated tube connection, a damaged tube, a canister vent valve stuck open, or a purge valve stuck closed.
      • P0442 sets because of a small leak, which can come from a purge valve stuck open or a canister vent valve stuck open.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. Inspect every purge connection for proper installation, and look along the lines for damage or wear; if damage is seen, confirm it with the smoke test.
      2. Some leaks show only under pressure and some only under vacuum, so check both ways; cycling the purge and vent solenoids with GDS2 while inspecting may show a sticking valve.
      3. Critical connections to check include: purge tube to purge valve (at the intake manifold), purge tube to chassis EVAP line (rear of the engine, near the transmission), chassis EVAP line to canister, and fuel tank load line to canister.
      4. Also check the vent valve line at the vent valve, the fuel tank load line jumper connection near the fuel tank, and that the fuel tank cap is closed properly.
      5. If all connections are good, check the vent valve for a stuck-open position; if the vent valve works correctly, go on to the purge valve.

    Remedy
This Preliminary information communicates the use of Winter grade fuel during the warm months of 2020 and the potential rivability issues that it can cause. The ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant reductions in driving and fuel use.  Due to the surplus of winter grade fuel sitting in storage (pipelines/stations) the EPA is waiving the fuel vapor requirement.  This will extend the use of winter fuel into the summer months. The drivability concerns should not be single events but should be multiple occurrences associated with hot days.

Aluminum wheel bead seat cleaning and resurfacing procedure

    1. 1Fault

      • A tire slowly loses air pressure over a period of days or weeks.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Abrasive elements may intrude between the tire and wheel at the bead seat, and the relative motion between tire and wheel lets the particles wear the wheel and tire materials.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. The corrosion may be on the inboard or outboard bead seating surface and is not visible until the tire is dismounted from the wheel.
      2. After a water dunk tank leak test, if the source of the leak is around the bead seat of the wheel, dismount the tire to examine the bead seat.
      3. Bead seat corrosion looks like blistering of the wheel finish, giving a rough or uneven surface on which the tire has difficulty keeping a proper seal.
      4. For vehicles with 32,186 km (20,000 mi) or less, the total combined linear area of repairable corrosion is 100 mm (4 in) or less; beyond that the wheel should be replaced.
      5. For vehicles that have exceeded 32,186 km (20,000 mi), the total combined linear area of repairable corrosion is 200 mm (8 in) or less.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. Use a clean-up (fine cut) sanding disc or biscuit to remove the corrosion and any flaking paint, back to material that is stable and firmly bonded to the wheel.
      2. Once the corrosion is eliminated, coat the repaired area with a commercially available tire sealant such as Patch Brand Bead Sealant or equivalent.

      Parts

      • Part number 16118, Patch Bead Sealer (1 Quart (= 0.946 L)).

      Caution

      • Do not replace a wheel for slow air loss unless the wheel has been evaluated and/or repair has been tried with this procedure.

    1. 1Fault

      • Condition 1 (2009 or prior vehicles): a Service Suspension System message on the DIC with incorrect rear ride height, and DTC C0696 or C0711 set in the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) module.
      • Condition 2: a Service Suspension System message on the DIC, possibly with low rear ride height under a heavy payload, and DTC C0711 set in the ESC module.
      • Condition 3: a loose hose hangs down at the left rear; upon inspection the hose may be found damaged or disconnected from the air inlet filter of the auto leveling suspension air compressor.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Condition 1 can be caused by the wiring to the automatic level control (ALC) pressure sensor being shorted to ground.
      • Condition 2 may be caused by an internal fault in the ALC pressure sensor, which can occur when moisture gets into the sensor.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. The air compressor assembly may have to be removed to see whether the wiring is pinched between the compressor assembly and the frame.
      2. If system pressure at start up is below 10 psi (69 kpa), the system runs the compressor to add air to the shocks as a replenishment cycle.
    3. 3Correction
