The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

How to tell

What to do

  1. With the engine cold, compression on multiple cylinders may read 0 PSI (= 0 kPa).
  2. The engine may pop through the intake or exhaust while cranking, and the spark plugs may be fuel fouled.
  3. If there is valve damage or cam followers are out of place, make the mechanical repairs first, then perform the cleaning procedure to keep the concern from returning.
  4. With the engine at operating temperature, slowly induce a bottle of GM Upper Engine and Fuel Injection Cleaner with RPM held above idle so the engine does not stall (typically around 2,000 RPM).
  5. Turn the engine off and let the cleaner soak for 2.5 to 3 hours.
  6. To complete the repair, change the engine oil and filter.

What is needed

Parts and materials
  • GM Upper Engine and Fuel Injector Cleaner 88861803 (in Canada 88861804; qty 1; decarboning when SI diagnosis leads to a valve sealing concern from carbon or sticking valves)
  • Fuel System Treatment Plus 88861013 (in Canada 88861012; qty 1; added to the fuel tank)
  • Engine oil 6 qt. and engine oil filter, qty 1 (see Parts Catalog; the oil and filter are changed to complete the repair)
Labor time
  • 4080148: Decarbon Engine Using Upper Engine Cleaner, 0.5 hr
  • Add: Change Engine Oil and Filter, 0.3 hr
Special tools
  • Kent Moore Tool J-45076 / J-35800-A or equivalent (suggested for inducing the cleaner through the throttle body)
