The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Possible causes

The documents say what to doOnly records name itThe size of a node, the width of a link and the numbers are records matching this search, not likelihoods.

Candidate cause (the documents say what to do)

Out of fuel with the gauge reading above empty, cranks but no start, stall (replace the fuel sensor, not the sender module)

1 of the records matching this search name this component as the cause.

What to do

  1. Replace the fuel sensor.

Caution: Do not replace the fuel sender module; the reference is bulletin 04-08-49-018E.

Outside the documents and the records

The four pages read are all question-and-advice exchanges on Q&A sites; none reports that replacing the fuel level sensor cured the fault. The one Yukon XL page (2001 model year) says only that the gauge misbehaved, with no reading and no repair. No Japanese shop record was found.

  • Two of the four pages read (a 2005 Silverado and a 2006 Sierra 1500) are owners' questions saying the fuel gauge at times shows more fuel than the tank holds. 2CarProsCar Talk Community
  • A 2017 question on Car Talk Community (2006 Sierra 1500) says the needle falls to the 1/4 mark and stops there; sometimes the truck runs a good while longer, and sometimes the fuel is gone soon after the needle reaches 1/4. Car Talk Community
  • A 2008 question on 2CarPros (2005 Silverado, 38,000 miles (= 61,155 km)) says the gauge at times shows up to about twice the fuel actually in the tank, returns to the right value only at an engine start, and did not change after the connectors at the tank were checked for dirt and looseness. The answerer says a bad fuel level sensor in the tank is the most likely cause. 2CarPros
  • A 2009 question on 2CarPros (2005 Escalade, 45,000 miles (= 72,420 km)) says the dealer ran a gauge sweep, found that was not the cause, and decided to replace the fuel sensor; the result after the replacement is not reported. Another poster on the same page writes that neither a used fuel pump nor a replacement instrument cluster cured a similar fault. 2CarPros
  • A 2009 post on Car Talk Community says the fuel gauge of a 2001 Yukon XL began misbehaving at under 100,000 miles (= 160,934 km) (no repair is described). Car Talk Community

The sentences above were written by FaultCrate from what shops' public pages and Q&A sites state as fact (none of the pages' wording is shown; a second reader checked each against its pages). A record of another vehicle says which vehicle. A Q&A thread is a question and advice, and may not say how the repair ended. The links below are places to look; the contents of pages not read were not checked.
