Candidate cause (the documents say what to do)
Unwanted ABS activation at low speed (front wheel speed sensor mounting corrosion)
These vehicles may have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor.
With the brakes applied between about 6 km/h (3.7 mph) and 16 km/h (10 mph), the corrosion may cause unwanted ABS activation.
What to do
- The reading should be at least 350 mV AC; if it is less, the wheel speed sensor must be replaced.
- If the sensor's mounting surface is warped or bent, the sensor must be replaced.
- Dealers remove the sensor, clean its mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor and grease, reinstall it and check peak-to-peak output voltage.
- The passage heading states that the repair is cleaning the wheel speed sensor mounting surface.
- The recall procedure is to remove the sensor, clean the mounting surface, apply a rust inhibitor (Zinc-X) to the surface and reinstall the sensor; the sensor is replaced if necessary.
- GM's earlier recall procedure in Canada also included greasing the mounting surfaces and verifying that the wheel speed signal output voltages were within specification.
Caution: Do not pry the sensor out of the bore; prying breaks the sensor body off in the bore.

Outside the documents and the records
The three pages read are questions and answers about the Chevrolet Tahoe (2002 and 2004) and Silverado (2001), not records of the Yukon or Yukon XL. All are Q&A threads, and none reports that cleaning went on to cure the fault.
- In two of the three pages read (a 2001 Silverado 2WD and a 2004 Tahoe 4WD), ABS activation just before a stop or at low speed was happening on a vehicle whose front hubs with built-in sensors, or left front sensor, had already been renewed. On the Silverado the brake and ABS lamps also lit at times, and on the Tahoe the lamp came on or stayed off depending on how many spacers were fitted under the sensor. Car Talk Community2CarPros
- In a 2CarPros question about a 2004 Tahoe (4WD), the mechanics answering advise pulling both front sensors and cleaning their mounts, because both sides can be at fault even when the scan tool names only one. 2CarPros
- In the 2CarPros question about a 2004 Tahoe (4WD), one answerer explains how he settles the shim count: he gauges the depth from the sensor opening to the tone ring with a snug-fitting wooden rod, sets that against the length of the sensor, and adds or removes shims accordingly. 2CarPros
- In a Car Talk Community question about a 2002 Tahoe, the owner writes that the dealer could not reproduce the fault in a few miles of driving and, after checking the ABS, told her there was no trace of it having activated. Car Talk Community
- A Car Talk Community thread about a 2001 Silverado says the sensor can break on removal and gives $90 for a sensor and $115 plus shipping, bought online, for a bearing and hub with built-in sensor. A post on 2CarPros says the repair for rust under the sensors on a 2002 Silverado 2500 cost $228.00. Car Talk Community2CarPros
The sentences above were written by FaultCrate from what shops' public pages and Q&A sites state as fact (none of the pages' wording is shown; a second reader checked each against its pages). A record of another vehicle says which vehicle. A Q&A thread is a question and advice, and may not say how the repair ended.
