Oil pump pickup (screen) O-ring cut: engine tick / lifter noise

4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L or 6.0L V8 (RPOs LR4, LM7, L59, LS1, LS6, LQ9, LQ4); 2000-2003 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL

Customers may report an engine tick that has likely been present since new and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi).

The noise may be present at cold start, appear to diminish, and then return as the engine warms to operating temperature.

The O-ring seal between the oil pump screen and the oil pump may be cut, causing aeration of the oil.

What to do

  1. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace it as necessary.
  2. The O-ring for C/K trucks is part number 12563963.

Part numbers printed in the document

The numbers are as the document prints them. The name and the replacing number are what the pages of GMPartsGiant, a reseller of genuine parts and not GM, state. Aftermarket equivalents are not checked here (the links only search by number). Confirm the fit for the vehicle (VIN) before ordering.

Caution

  • The noise may often be diagnosed as a collapsed lifter.
