Brake pedal moves or self applies at full steering lock (Hydro-Boost)

Vehicles equipped with Hydro-Boost brake system; the model table lists Yukon 2001 to 2004 together with Escalade, Avalanche, Tahoe, Suburban and others (table layout is partly garbled in the extracted text)

During full-lock or near full-lock turns the brake pedal may move down or self apply.

The cause may be the internal dump valve of the hydro-boost not seating properly because of contamination in the steering system.

Contamination can come from steering pump damage when the wheel is held at the stops for an extended period, or from adding contaminated power steering fluid.

What to do

  1. The Hydro-Boost system is not serviceable and must be replaced.

Caution

  • Before replacing the Hydro-Boost, the entire steering system (pump, lines, cooler, gear box) must be flushed to avoid a recurrence.
  • If the vehicle returns with the same concern within 20k miles (= 32,187 km) of the previous repair, replacing the entire steering system is recommended.
