What the manufacturer’s document says

PIP3119M ・ fault and correction ・ names this vehicle

Applies to

  • Applies to 2004 - 2015 GMC Savana, Sierra, Sierra Hybrid, Yukon and Yukon Hybrid (note: the Yukon years run later than the years this service covers).

    the passage
2004 - 2015 GMC Savana, Sierra, Sierra Hybrid, Yukon, Yukon Hybrid
  • Only vehicles with a gasoline V8 engine are covered.

    the passage
With a V8 Engine (gas only)

Fault

  • The SES light may come on with DTC P0420 and/or P0430 stored on low mileage vehicles or on vehicles whose catalytic converter was recently replaced.

    the passage
A SES light may be experienced on low mileage vehicles, or vehicles that have recently had the catalytic converter replaced. Upon inspection, DTCs P0420 and/or P0430 may be stored.

Finding the cause

Possible causes

  • On a new vehicle the catalyst efficiency DTCs P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time so the converter can break in.

    the passage
On a new vehicle, catalytic converter efficiency DTCs P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time to allow break-in of the catalytic converter.
  • After a converter replacement the run-time restriction is no longer in place, so the new converter may not have finished breaking in and a false DTC P0420 and/or P0430 can set.

    the passage
As a result, the catalytic converter may not have completed a thorough break-in cycle after replacement, possibly resulting in a false DTC P0420 and/or P0430.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

  • On a new or low mileage vehicle, use the Tech 2 to read the engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the IPC Data Display/Data 1 List.

    the passage
If these DTCs are found on a new/low mileage vehicle, use the Tech 2 to verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the IPC Data Display/Data 1 List.

Correction

Repair

  1. If this is the case, clear the DTCs and perform the break-in drive cycle.

    the passage
If this occurs, clear the DTCs and perform the drive cycle below.
  2. Drive cycle step: drive at sustained highway speed for 25 to 30 minutes.

    the passage
Drive vehicle at sustained highway speed for 25 to 30 minutes
  3. Drive cycle step: after stopping and shutting off, restart the engine and resume highway speed for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.

    the passage
Restart the engine and resume highway speed for an additional 10 to 15 minutes
  4. Finally restart the engine, run the vehicle at the conditions for the DTC P0420/430 tests and make sure it passes them.

    the passage
Restart the engine and operate vehicle at the conditions for running the DTC P0420/430 tests and assure that the vehicle passes these diagnostic tests.
  5. If the diagnostics do not pass, perform the SI diagnostics and repair as necessary.

    the passage
If the diagnostics do not pass, perform SI diagnostics and repair as necessary.

  1. Communication summary

Machine translation (unreviewed)

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on at low mileage. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and or P0430 stored. Technician should be advised that the catalytic converter efficiency Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0420 and P0430 are disabled for the first hour of engine run time to allow break-in of the catalytic converter. Technician will need to use a Tech2 to check the verify engine run time on the Engine Hour Meter in the Instrument Panel Cluster Data Display/Data 1 List in the scan tool match. If the engine run time is less than one hour, the battery may have been disconnected, or another vehicle power loss event may have occurred, during vehicle manufacturing. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle. If the catalytic converter was replaced and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes set it may be a result of the engine run time restrictions no longer being in place since the vehicle is no longer new. Technician will need to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes and perform a drive cycle.
