The vehicle (where a record says)

A record is under an engine, a drive or a series only where it says so: the characters of the vehicle identification number filed with a complaint, its text, or what its document says it applies to. A record that does not say is kept as "not stated". The filed numbers and the documents do not tell 4WD from AWD.

Common on this vehicle:Warning lightMisfire or rough idleLeakNoiseDoes not startHard start or long crankStalls or shuts offLoss of engine power, no acceleration

Record by record

112 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.

A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Engine Block Cylinder Bore Damage Preliminary Information

    1. 1Fault

      • The tip is for cases where cylinder bore damage, scoring or out of round is suspected as the cause of engine oil consumption, misfire, cylinder leakage or blow by.
    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Dirt intrusion: if the air filtering system has been compromised the engine wears out very quickly; grit is found in the intake runners and the bores look lightly sand blasted.
      • Catalytic converter failure: if the converter brick is broken, its dust can be drawn back into the engine, and the bores look sand blasted.

Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)

      1. The peak to valley specification for the crosshatch is .65-2.8 microns.
      2. Cylinder damage or scoring: the cylinder walls have grooves deep enough to catch with a fingernail.
      3. An out of round bore has areas where the crosshatch is missing or worn in different sections of the bore.
      4. If crosshatch is present all the way around the bore from top to bottom, the bore is not out of round.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      • With converter dust, the back cylinders go first if caught early; otherwise there is no crosshatch left and the engine needs to be replaced.

      Caution

      • GM has not had an issue with cylinders being machined out of round for any engine family in recent history.
      • A cylinder suspected of being oversize can only be confirmed by checking with an air gauge at the engine plant.

    Metal Surface Cleaning Procedure

    1. 1Fault

      Not stated

    2. 2Finding the cause

      Possible causes

      • Abrasive pads produce fine grit that the oil filter cannot remove from the oil; this grit is abrasive and has been known to cause internal engine damage.
      • Abrasive pads can easily remove enough material to round cylinder head surfaces, which affects gasket sealing, especially in the narrow areas between combustion chambers and coolant jackets.
      • An abrasive pad removes 0.203 mm (0.008 in) of metal in about 15 seconds.
      • Aluminum Oxide in the engine oil causes premature engine bearing failure, in some cases in as little as 2,200 km (1,367 mi) or less after the repair.
    3. 3Correction

      Repair

      1. GM recommends a razor blade or plastic gasket scraper to clean the gasket surface on engine components that are to be reused.
      2. With a razor blade scraper, use a new blade for each cylinder head and corresponding block surface, and hold the blade as parallel to the gasket surface as possible.
      3. Alternatively, spray GM Low VOC Cleaner, P/N 19287401 (in Canada, P/N 88901247), on the mating surface.
      4. Let it soak for several minutes to loosen the old RTV sealer/gasket material, then remove the loose material with a plastic razor blade or non-metallic scraper.

      Caution

      • Do not use abrasive pad/bristle devices to clean the gasket surfaces of engine components.
      • The appearance of the gasket surface is not critical, the feel is; indentations left by the old gasket in the cylinder head will be filled by the new gasket.
