Record by record
32 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.
Symptom
Component named as the cause
How it is said to have ended
- says it came back3
- result not stated3
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Known issuesBuzz at the accelerator pedal on the first acceleration after start (Supplemental Brake Assist self-test, normal)1
Manufacturer communication2003 GMC YUKON ・ 2003-03-01
1Fault
- A buzz that can be heard and felt comes from the accelerator pedal area on the first acceleration after starting, only the first time the vehicle reaches approximately 10 mph (16 kph).
- It does not occur again until the key is cycled off then on, and it may coincide with the 1-2 shift of the automatic transmission.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- The noise is the Supplemental Brake Assist (SBA) performing a self-test; the SBA, mounted to the brake vacuum booster canister, is new for 2003 and supplies vacuum to the brake booster if vacuum is low or lost.
3Correction
Caution
- This is a normal condition and no repair should be attempted.
- The SBA is used only on vehicles with vacuum brake boosters, not on vehicles with Hydra-Boost brake systems.

- Remedy
- Accelerator Pedal Buzz and Vibration This condition affects some 2003 Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Avalanche, Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Escalade, and EXT vehicles. Owners may experience a buzz noise which can be heard and felt, from the accelerator pedal area on the first acceleration after starting the vehicle. It will occur only the first time the vehicle reaches approximately 10 mph (16 kph) after start-up. It will not occur again until the key is cycled off then on. Based on the driving habits of the owner, the condition may occur at approximately the same time as the 1-2 shift of the automatic transmission. This noise is caused by the Supplemental Brake Assist (SBA) performing a self-test. The SBA, which is mounted to the brake vacuum booster canister, is new for 2003 and provides vacuum for the brake booster in case of low vacuum or vacuum loss. This is a normal condition and no repair attempts should be made. The SBA is used only on vehicles equipped with vacuum brake boosters and is not used on vehicles equipped with Hydra-Boost brake systems.
Known issuesRPO DL3 power folding mirror loose, moves or shakes after being folded by hand (cycle it electrically)1
Manufacturer communication2003 GMC FULL SIZE PICKUPS AND UTILITIES (YUKON) ・ 2003-07-01
RPO DL3 electrically folding mirrors move or shake after being folded by hand
1Fault
- The result is that the mirror may move and/or shake.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- These mirrors must always be moved electrically; a mirror folded inward by hand and moved back outboard by hand will not latch into the detent.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- The mirrors fold inboard electrically with the same switches used for adjusting the individual mirrors: place the L/R toggle switch in neutral, then use the pad to fold the mirrors in or out.
3Correction
Repair
- If the mirror shows these conditions, cycle it inboard and back outboard with the electric controls; this makes the mirrors click into the proper detents.
Caution
- New vehicle prep technicians should know these procedures and verify proper operation of the mirrors before delivery.

- Remedy
- Electrically Folding Mirrors There are some misunderstandings about the operation of RPO DL3 mirrors on 2003 full size pickups and utilities (fig 12) . The mirrors in this option can be folded inboard electrically (when entering a car wash, or parking in a confined space, for instance) using the same switches normally used for adjusting the individual mirrors. Place the L/R toggle switch in neutral. Then use the pad to fold the mirrors in or out. These mirrors must always be moved electrically. If a mirror is folded inward manually, and then moved back outboard manually, the mirror will not latch into the detent. The result is that the mirror may move and/or shake. TIP: If the mirror displays these conditions, simply cycle the mirror inboard and back outboard using the electric controls. This will cause the mirrors to click into the proper detents. New vehicle prep technicians should be made aware of these procedures and should verify proper operation of the mirrors before delivery.

Wheel Installation and Torque Techniques
1Fault
- Vibration in the steering wheel or seat centered at 10-14 Hz, between 93-115 km/h (58-72 mph).
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- Wrong wheel torque methods can mount the wheel and tire assembly off center, so its mass "orbits" the hub axis and vibrates like a tire with high RFV or an imbalance.
3Correction
Repair
- Remove the tire and wheel assemblies, index them at least two stud positions from where they were, and reinstall them.
- With the wheel off the ground, install all lug nuts hand tight using only a socket.
- Snug all lug nuts in a star or criss-cross pattern with a hand wrench.
- Lower the vehicle until the tire has just enough contact to resist turning, then torque to specification with a torque wrench.
Caution
- This first order tire/wheel vibration may be misdiagnosed as wheel imbalance or excessive tire radial force variation.
- Improper torque may also distort the brake rotor.
- Do not use torque sticks or an impact driver to tighten wheel lug nuts.

Abnormal Noise or Vibration Investigation Preliminary Information
1Fault
- The customer notices a noise or vibration that seems abnormal and may not have been there when the vehicle was new.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- Step bars/nerf bars that touch both the truck frame and the cab without insulation carry the noise of a normally operating drive train into the passenger area.
- Other known contributors are running boards, bug shields, sun visors, vent shades, emergency lights, custom grilles, ski racks and bicycle racks.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- The first diagnostic step is to evaluate the vehicle for any after-market accessories.
- These items must be removed to evaluate whether they contribute to the concern.
3Correction
Caution
- If the root cause is a non-GM aftermarket accessory, no warranty claim should be filed; it is a customer pay item.

Technician will need to use Pico Oscilloscope Diagnostic Kit to effectively diagnosis vehicles. Technician should drive the vehicle will using the Pico Oscilloscope to record data. After the data is recorded it should be reviewed to determine the root cause of the concern. If a repair attempt made the concern better but not eliminated or had no affect at all, and are requesting assistance from General Motors Technical Assistance Center record another Pico file and save it to the computer. After the new Pico Oscilloscope data has been saved email the data to General Motors Technical Assistance Center in the subject line include ?Vibration? ?Business Associate Code? and the last 8 of the Vehicle Identification Number.
