Record by record
44 records state a cause or a remedy. Each record is shown as short labels in the order fault → finding the cause → correction. Press a label to narrow to the records that state it.
A ribbon is as wide as the records that state both of its ends (only the commonest are drawn). A record that names several symptoms or components runs through each. Orange is records that say the fault came back or was not fixed. Results come from owners’ reports only; one that does not say is “result not stated”. None of this is a likelihood of a cause or a rate at which work succeeds.

Diagnostic tip on valve, lifter or camshaft issues
1Fault

- Warning light
- Check engine / Service Engine Soon
- P0300
- P0301
- P0302
- P0303
- P0304
- P0305
- Misfire, chirp, squeak, squeal or tick noise, with the MIL illuminated and DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 set.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- A worn cam lobe on this engine family generally creates a consistent chirp, squeak, squeal or tick at camshaft speed and/or a misfire with a P0300-P0308 DTC.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- A verified noise is not eliminated by canceling fuel injectors and occurs at camshaft speed (half of crankshaft speed).
- If applying pressure to the valve side of a rocker changes the noise, a lifter and/or cam lobe concern on that cylinder is most likely.
- Measure cam lobe lift at the push rod side of the rocker arm; it differs from the SI specification but should be similar to the other rockers on the same bank.
- A bore scope or pen light helps when inspecting the cam lobes through the lifter bores; a damaged lobe is easy to overlook.
- A good indicator of a sticking valve is that misfires continue to count on an aggressive deceleration with engine braking.
3Correction
Repair
- If a worn camshaft lobe or lifter roller is found, replace the camshaft and all lifters following SI procedures.
- If force is needed to tap the valve off its seat, excessive carbon build up exists, which may be repaired by decarbonizing the engine.

- Repair:If force is needed to tap the valve off its seat, excessive carbon build up exists, which may be repaired by decarbonizing the engine.
- Confirm:Valve leakage is typically isolated by the Cylinder Leakage Test in SI, which finds excessive leakage past an intake or exhaust valve compared with the others.
- Confirm:The two pieces of a broken valve spring may stay stacked together and be hard to see; lightly pushing on different places on the springs with a small hammer handle may help.

Misfire and DTC Codes Diagnostic Information
1Fault
- With DTC P0300 - P0308 and/or P050D, use GDS and save the freeze frame records.
2Finding the cause
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- Perform the relative compression test in the PICO NVH or Oscilloscope software; SI Document number 5518386 covers the procedure.
- If it passes the relative compression test, the concern is an ignition or fuel delivery issue.
- Check the ignition supply voltage to the ignition module/coil assemblies and also to the fuel injectors.
- Inspect the spark plugs for anything abnormal.
- Note the fuel trim values and on which bank, and compare actual MAF with calculated air flow.
3Correction
Caution
- The injector balance procedure in GDS is only a preliminary test and its results should not decide injector replacement, especially with a low or no flow injector.

Intake Manifold Inspection/Replacement After Engine Damage
1Fault
- When an engine is replaced because of internal damage, extreme care is needed when transferring the intake manifold to the new Genuine GM service engine long block.
- Ingested catalytic converter material causes heavy wear to piston rings and cylinder walls, with misfires and oil consumption as the result.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- The internal damage may have discharged engine component debris into the intake manifold through broken pistons and/or bent, broken or missing intake valves.
- Replacement is required because the complex inlet runner and plenum configuration makes thorough cleaning difficult and complete removal of debris nearly impossible to verify.
- When a catalytic converter fails and the plugged inner brick breaks apart, converter material can be sucked back into the engine during valve overlap and spread through the intake manifold into the cylinder.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- After removing the intake manifold, inspect all cylinder head intake ports to see whether the valve heads are still present and not bent.
3Correction
Repair
- If debris is present in any of the cylinder head intake ports, the intake manifold should be replaced.
- After broken valves, broken pistons or piston to cylinder head damage, the intake manifold must be replaced or subsequent severe engine damage will occur.
Caution
- Reinstalling an intake manifold taken from an engine with debris deposits may let remaining debris be ingested into the new service engine.
- The plastic intake manifold cannot be disassembled.

Engine Block Cylinder Bore Damage Information
1Fault
- The block is suspected of cylinder bore damage, scoring or out of round as the cause of oil consumption, misfire, cylinder leakage or blow by.
2Finding the cause
Possible causes
- If a catalytic converter fails and the brick breaks, its dust can be drawn back into the engine.
Steps to confirm (in the document’s order)
- The peak to valley spec for crosshatch is .65-2.8 microns; any deviation and the crosshatch will be gone.
- Cylinder damage or scoring: the walls have grooves deep enough to catch with a finger nail.
- If there is crosshatch all the way around the bore from top to bottom, the bore is not out of round.
- Dirt intrusion: with a compromised filtering system the bores look lightly sand blasted, and the crosshatch is faint with no sharpness.
- A block with this converter-dust failure has bores that look sand blasted.
3Correction
Repair
- If not caught early there will be no crosshatch and the engine will need to be replaced.
Caution
- GM has not had an issue with cylinders being machined out of round for any engine family in recent history.
